To Hybrid or Not?

The word "HYBRID" is very catchy nowadays in the motoring world in Malaysia. As a new generation tech-embracing Malaysia, I would ask, how feasible is it to own a Hybrid car in Malaysia?

Currently, there are 3 types of Hybrid cars that are available to the masses in Malaysia, Toyota's Prius, Honda's Civic Hybrid and Honda's Insight. I'll skip the engine details and such as you can google it yourself. What concerns me most is how much will I be spending on running a Hybrid car, in terms of petrol costs. As you know, Malaysia's petrol prices are escalating on a quarterly/often basis, I won't be surprise that someday, it will someday reach a level that most people here find it hard to run a car. As the fact that Malaysia public transport sucks big time. Anyway, enough of the whining.

Prius consumption is 5.6L per 100KM, Civic is 5.5-6.5L per 100KM whereas Insight is 6.2L per 100KM. So if based on the current price of the Ron 95 fuel that most petrol station are selling.
Prius will costs 10.08 to run 100km, Civic 9.90-11.70 and Insight 11.16. So it makes out that for every KM, it will costs your 0.108, 0.099-0.117 and 0.112 respectively.

Taking the above numbers and compare it to my Myvi 1.3 EZi, which I can get 13.3Km per litre of petrol. So the average I can get on a 30L is about 400KM. It calculated out that for 100KM I'll need about 7.52L of petrol which will costs me about 13.53 .

So...just based on the rough figures that I compute above, it seems that for every 100km, I can save at least 2 ringgit and above. And from my current usage of my car, I can save above 40.00 ringgit per month.....interesting it seems.........but consider that fact that Hybrid card needs to change their battery every certain amount of mileage done or number of years, the savings might not just be able to cover the batter changes itself.

The prices of these battery ranges from 7K-15K.....so I don't think I want to embrace Hybrid cars as of now.
